You don't have to be a male to get your work serialized in a shounen manga. The brain behind the world of D.Gray-man proves it.
Hoshino Katsura (星野桂) was born in 21st of April, 1980 in Shiga Prefecture, Japan; along with her older twin sister. Her bloodtype is O. She likes curry, baths, and curling up in bed. Her favourite colour is black. She listens to Porno Graffiti, L'Arc~en~Ciel, and jazz music. She hates bananas, milk, and miso soup. She said that she would scream and toss a banana somewhere if she saw one.
Hoshino started her debut as a manga artist in the age of 21. Her one-shot manga ZONE, published in Akamaru Jump, 2003, was adaptated for her recent work, which is also the most popular one, D.Gray-man, which was serialized in Weekly Shounen Jump.
In the beginning of the serialization, people had been wondering about Hoshino's gender. Her works belong to shounen category, however her art style looks less boyish (take Naruto or One Piece for example.) She never stated her gender in D.Gray-man, so it remained a mystery until she made a public appearance back in 2008. During its serialization, D.Gray-man has gone through several breaks due to Hoshino's sickness and injuries. As of October 2009, the serialization has been moved to Jump Square. thus each chapter is released once a month.
