Name

Expecting to see some Kabalarians name analysis? Hell no, this isn't a Kabalarians-powered page. Disappointed? Well, sorry about that. :P It's just my opinion and a little information on Lenalee's unusual name.

If you read D.Gray-man in Japanese raws, you will see a bunch of Katakanas floating around in the characters' names. You might already have your own imagination on how those would be written in Romaji, but you will choke once you see the list of the characters' official Romaji names.

Lenalee's name is written in Katakana: リナリー・リー (Rinarii Rii). While her surname obviously would be written in either Lee or Li, the fans romanized her given name in various ways: Linali, Linalee, Rinali, etc. But no one would have thought of Lenalee, yes? The last one, surprisingly, was the one that Hoshino-sensei chose for the official romanization of her given name.

I myself would rather write it Linalee because it makes the most sense compared to the other romanizations. I still believe that Lenalee should be read as Lenali or written as レナリー. I finally gave up when D.Gray-man fanbook, Gray Ark was out—Lenalee's name is without doubt written this way. There's also an omake in the anime which displays the correct spelling of the characters. Again, it's Lenalee Lee.

Lenalee's nationality, as stated in her profile, is Chinese—so is Lenalee considered a Chinese name? A deviantArt friend of mine once protested about this. She said, “How could there be a Chinese who has 3 characters in her (first) name?” Well, I am no Chinese, therefore I know nothing about Chinese cultures.

However, there's this one thing I learned: Chinese given names usually written in one or two characters, while Lenalee consists of three characters, let's forget the official romanization for a while: Li-na-li; so it's against the name system. Komui, on the other hand, sounds more Chinese according to the rule, because it can be spelled in two characters: Ko-mui.

Hmm. I don't think this really is something that worths a debate, though. And if you can hate one character just because he or she doesn't have a name which strictly follows the name system, well, I just find it amusing and simply reasonless.

Hoshino-sensei seems to be rather fascinated of this name, judging by how she uses the same name for Lenalee's prototype in "Zone". That being said, people, let's simply forget those complaints and go with the official writing—nothing will change what's already written in the book, really.
